Continuous Improvement to Improve Your Teaching

Post 1- Meet Dr. Deming

Dr. W. Edwards Deming believed in a philosophy of management and identified 14 points in the process that increased the total quality of a product. These 14 points were created with businesses in mind, not classrooms.

However, after studying Dr. Deming’s approach to total quality for many years, I finally landed on three books that demonstrate how schools, teachers and administrators can amend these principles to fit education.

We are in the business of inspiring young minds, increasing knowledge, and generating enthusiasm for life long learning. Our profession has always relied on data from valid testing to make adjustments to our curriculum and teaching methods. When used properly, data is needed and helpful to teachers. In fact, Dr. Deming’s PDSA (plan, do, study, act) cycle fits education perfectly.

The next seven posts will reflect on how the 14 points apply to the teaching profession.
